The "Folk Literature of the Sephardic Jews Multimedia Digital LIbrary" is funded by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation, Digital Library Initiative Phase 2 and the Maurice Amado Foundation. The goal is to create a web-accessible archive of the Sephardic oral literature collected by Samuel G. Armistead, Joseph H. Silverman and Israel J. Katz in fieldwork conducted since 1957.

Commentary on transcriptions has been provided by Samuel G. Armistead, who is solely responsible for identifying the ballad-titles and other genres of this folk literature.

The orthographic conventions used in transcribing these files are based upon those of Samuel G. Armistead. We have attempted to represent all variations from the pronunciation of modern Castilian Spanish and our orthography therefore captures phonetic phenomena which use of modern Spanish orthography would otherwise obscure. Y en la casa se quedó la señora y la criada. Y a eso del medio día, la señora está malvada, fue en casa de su cuñado que de esta suerte le habla: -- Querido cuñado mío, muncho te quiero en el alma. Y, aun casada con tu hermano, y a ti jamás te olvidara. -- Como si fuera ligosa, como mi sangre manchara, que de un braso la agarró, la sacó fuera de cazza. La señora se marchó yena de cólera y rabia. Y asín que yegó la noche, que vino Juan de la casa, se sentaron a senar todozz en buena compaña. La mujer dise al marido: -- No sabrás lo que me pasa. -- Cuéntamelo tú, mujer, cuenta que no sé de nada. -- Que hoy sentada yo en mi casa, sin que nadie me acompañara, y tu [he]rmano ha querido ofender en mí honra y fama. Como no le resibí, me diera de bofetadas, si no te crees de mí preguntazz a la criada. -- La criada jura en falso que así eran las palabras. Como [e]so oyó el cabayero sacó su doble navaja. Porque no la resibí te dijo tales palabras. -- Como es'oyó el cabayero sacó su noble navaja y al infelis de su hermano dióle siete puñaladas y ayí muerto lo dejó y en medio de aqueya sala y acudieron los vesinos y una pareja de guardias. -- Señores, voy a morir, voy a contar lo que pasa: Yo maté a un hermano mío sin tener culpa de nada, so por un testiguo falso que ha dado la criada. -- La justisia que le dieron que a la cársel lo yevaran y en la justisia salió que manden por la criada y que la den garrotes fríos para que escarmiento haga.
